IMAP on mail.sas

IMAP is a way of reading mail from your desktop computer. You can leave messages on the server (cattell), move them from one file (or "folder") to another, and read them wherever they are stored. You can also decode and "open" attachments automatically by clicking on them, if your desktop computer is set up for them. You should use IMAP, rather than POP, if at all possible.

Most current versions of desktop mail programs can use IMAP. Configuration instructions are in the following places for:
Netscape 7 or Mozilla for Windows
Netscape 7 or Mozilla for Mac

Here is a summary of what you need to know for Mozilla, which will probably work for Netscape 7 or Thunderbird.

The rest of the stuff you don't need to deal with unless you want to change something.

If you want to be able to send email to people at Penn by name, to to Edit/Preferences/Mail and Newsgroups/Adddressing. Under "Edit directories" click the Add button and add "Penn". Highlight that word and click "Edit". For Hostname enter "directory.upenn.edu". For Base DN enter "ou=People, o=upenn.edu". (The upper case P is important.) Leave the port setting at 389. Do not check SSL. This will allow you to access Penn's LDAP address server.
