GENERAL
OVERVIEW
The Shop offers a diverse array of consulting, engineering, design,
fabrication, maintenance, and other technical services related to
psychological and neurophysiological research. If you require technical
or engineering support, please see us to discuss your proposal,
plan, project, or problem. Sometimes we can handle everything for
you or at least some part thereof; and if not, we can often suggest
alternatives or other sources of help. We develop and provide interfaces,
data acquisition and control systems, and almost anything involving
mechanics, electronics, computers, and more. All members of Department
of Psychology from students through faculty may utilize our services.
The
Shop provides an electronics design, prototype, and assembly facility,
a wood, plastics, sheet metal and general shop area complete with
hand and power tools, a small machine shop facility, and an eight-seat
seminar room with four computer and electronic workstations. The
Shop stocks and maintains a wide variety of materials, parts, hardware,
equipment, and accessories. Members of the Department of Psychology
may use the facilities at their own discretion with two important
caveats: First, you must be fully checked out on any tools or equipment
with which you are not totally familiar. Second, you must follow
the posted "Shop Rules" for both the 3720 Solomon and
the 3401 Perception Shops.
Queries,
consultations, and requests for Shop services should be directed
to Psychology Department's Electronics Engineer, John Andrews-Labenski,
E-mail: jala@psych.upenn.edu
In
John's absence, please contact the Department's Computer/Electronics
Technician, Seth P. Martin, E-mail: sethpm@psych.upenn.edu
Or,
telephone 215-898-8092. Posting of current work schedules are on
the A-15 door of the Solomon Shop at 3720 Walnut, and on the 338C
door of the Perception Shop at 3401 Walnut Street.
While
John manages the day-to-day activities of the Shop, faculty oversight
and supervision is provided by Saul Sternberg, E-mail:
saul@psych.upenn.edu
The
Shop also serves as the "Electronics Resource" of the
Instrumentation Module of the Vision Research Center under the direction
of David Brainard, E-mail: brainard@psych.upenn.edu
In
addition, time and personnel permitting, the Shop also provides
technical and engineering support to other University of Pennsylvania
Departments and Schools.
