Undergraduate Program: Information about Majoring in Psychology

Declaring the Major

Students should declare a major in their sophomore year. To declare a Psychology Major you must meet with Dr. Robert Seyfarth, Director of Undergraduate Studies (dus@psych.upenn.edu), or Ms. Claire Ingulli, Undergraduate Coordinator. You must fill out a Psychology Major Worksheet and bring it with you to the meeting. See below for office hours.

Ms. Claire Ingulli (cingulli@psych.upenn.edu), Undergraduate Coordinator, is available M-F for general advising and to declare major/minor.

No appointment is needed, just visit during open office hours (see below).

Important ! Your Psychology Major Worksheet must be completed prior to your advising meeting and brought with you to the meeting.

Requirements for the Major

The Major in Psychology requires a total of 13 credits, including Introductory Psychology, 5 distributional courses, statistics, a research experience course, and several additional Psychology courses. Please note: Five (5) of the total credits towards the Psychology major must be Penn classes taken in the Penn Psychology Dept.

Honors Program

The Honors Program has been developed to recognize excellence in psychology among Penn undergraduates and to enhance skills related to psychological research. There are two primary components to the Honors Program: ( i) a substantial, independent research project, and (ii) a complementary Honors Seminar.   Upon successful completion of all requirements the student will be awarded a degree in Psychology with Honors. Please note: you can click on the "Forms" link at left to access the Psychology Major Worksheet, and the Request Forms for 200 and 300 level courses.

Transfer Credit

Courses taken by Penn students in an approved study abroad program or by transfer students prior to their enrollment at Penn may be approved for credit in Psychology . Courses taken at another domestic institution while a Penn student are not eligible for transfer credit.
