First some warnings:
Now, here is how it works.
I pay, usually $3-$5, for doing a study. I pay through PayPal, after every few studies. To get your money, you will have to have an account there, but you don't need that now. PayPal will notify you when you need to open an account.
When a study is available, I send email to some of those on my mailing list (with everyone getting an equal chance). If you are registered (on my list), you should expect to get email at least once a month. Each study will be available until I get enough responses on it.
I have about 1,600 people on my mailing list. Use this form to see if you are on the mailing list.
I remove people from the list whose email address is no longer valid, who block my mail with a spam filter, or who send me a request to verify my email. (I no longer remove those whose mailbox is full.)
Other studies to do, some for pay, are listed at the bottom of this page.
* To be paid, you must be registered, and you must have a PayPal account using the email address where you receive notices of new studies. The registration form (when it is available) requires your first and last name and your address.
* When you do a study, you identify yourself with your email address at the end.
* To be paid for a study, you must answer all the questions seriously. Payment is not automatic. I look at the answers.
* Please keep track of which studies you have done. To help you do this, I send an automated email reply, which goes to the address you give me, when you complete a study. If you do not get it in a few minutes, use the fail-safe mechanism described below.
* You must be 18 or older to do these studies.
* I am setting a $7 minimum payment for everyone. I must owe you that much before I pay you. (But sometimes I set the minimum higher so that I don't run out of money in the account.)
If you want to change your information or remove yourself, send me email (baron@psych.upenn.edu).
In summer, 2001, and again in 2006, I paid some people two or three times for the same studies. I am deducting these overpayments from current payments. A minus sign on your payment after the code of a study means that the overpayment has been deducted.
If I owe you money that you should have received long ago, let me know at (baron@psych.upenn.edu).
*Do not use the back button.
*These studies are designed to run on browsers that support modern web standards, such as Firefox, Safari 1.2 (but not earlier), Netscape 7.2, and Opera. Some of them (fewer and fewer) work on Internet Explorer, or even WebTV, but I don't test them.
*I have a fail-safe mechanism, which prints your data on your screen at the study's end, with instructions to paste them into an email message to me, if the submission failed.
I do not use pop-ups, so you can block pop-ups if you want. I do use alerts. Do not block those.
You do not need to stay connected to the internet while you do the study. You can disconnect while you are doing it, then connect again before you click the submit button. You can also save the entire study, even move it to another computer, and do it later - but please let me know if you plan to wait a day.
I test everything, but there are occasional problems. Sometimes you can fix them by reloading. If you get a JavaScript error message, please tell me what the message says. Also, tell me what browser and version you are using. Send error reports to baron@psych.upenn.edu.
I do not share my registration list with anyone. When I report the results of this research, I do not include any information that could identify you. Names and addresses are kept on two very secure computers (not this one). Social Security Numbers are no longer required.
