Members of the University of Pennsylvania community who participate will be entered in a cash-prize drawing. Details of the drawings are given with each study. Persons not affiliated with Penn are free to participate, though no compensation is available.
Before participating in this research, the University of Pennsylvania requires that you understand what the study is about and your rights as a voluntary participant. This process is known as "informed consent." Such a consent form is provided below. Please read this information before proceeding to the study you are interested in. Purpose: The purpose of this research is to understand basic processe s human beings use in producing and understanding language. Specific hypotheses and predictions cannot be divulged until after the experiment because such knowledge could affect the results. After the experiment is completed, a detailed debriefing will be provided.
Selection of Participants: Participants are volunteers who have visited this website, read the consent form and study instructions, and agreed to take part.
Procedure: Procedures vary from study to study. You can find details by clicking on the links to individual studies at the bottom of this form.
Benefits: Participants will receive no direct benefit from this research.
Risks: The procedures used in the experiments are harmless and have been used in prior research.
Injury/complications: Expenses due to injury that may result from this experiment will not be covered by the University of Pennsylvania or the Department of Psychology. However, as noted above in the risks section, the procedures used in this experiment are harmless. This injury statement is required of all research conducted at the University of Pennsylvania.
Compensation: Students, faculty, and staff of the University of Pennsylvania who participate will be entered into a cash prize drawing. Details of the drawing are provided with each study. People not affiliated with Penn can participate, but will not be compensated. When the study is completed all participants will receive a summary of the results via e-mail.
Withdrawal:Participation in this research is voluntary. Volunteers are under no obligation to complete the study and can cease participation at any time. Withdrawal from the study will in no way prejudice the subject's future interactions with the University.
