Mission
Penn Behavioral Researchers in Economics and Decision-making (Penn BREAD) was founded in Fall 2002. The main objective of the group is to build a community of graduate students who are interested in interdisciplinary research in behavioral economics and decision making. The group brings together students who have common research interests but are located across a number of departments. Many of these students lack fellow students in their own departments who share these interests. Additionally, each student in the group draws from their own discipline to bring a unique perspective to the group's discussions, enhancing everyone's learning. The group is open to all Penn PhD students interested in behavioral economics and/or decision-making. We currently have 18 members, representing the departments of Psychology, Economics, OPIM, Insurance & Risk Management, Marketing, Management, and Health Services Management.
Our weekly meetings are Friday afternoon, from 3:00 to 4:30. The sessions take one of three formats: faculty discussions, student presentations or paper discussions.
Sessions
Faculty Discussions
We invite a faculty member to either discuss a project they are currently working on or to provide advice on an important topic, such as attending and presenting at academic conferences. These discussions give the group an opportunity to meet and interact with faculty working in the field, and to receive guidance about succeeding in academia.Student Presentations
One student presents some of their work, typically in preparation for an upcoming talk they are giving, and the remaining students serve as an audience, asking questions and providing feedback at the end. These sessions allow the student to have risk-free practice in front of an audience and gives the other members of the group an opportunity to learn about a colleague's research.Paper Discussions
We choose a research paper from the field that the group reads before the session and discusses during the session, similar to a seminar format. These sessions provide a forum for discussion, debate and learning about a relevant area of research.Membership
Anyone, who is interested in the topic and is able to attend at least one session per semester is welcomed.Comments, suggestions and questions are welcomed !!
